UNM's Tsiskarishvili: Georgia must first be liberated from this regime before fair, free elections can be held

“The Georgian Dream hopes to frighten people, to suppress the protest wave, but I am convinced everything will happen the opposite way – people will become angrier,” stated Petre Tsiskarishvili, the United National Movement Secretary-General, responding to the changes initiated by the Georgian Dream regarding the tightening of legislation in several directions.

Furthermore, according to Tsiskarishvili, “Georgia must first be liberated from the regime and only after that can fair and free elections be held.”

“What’s important here is the purpose behind implementing such repressive instruments by the Georgian Dream, by this self-proclaimed, self-styled government. They hope they will frighten people and suppress the protest wave and mood, but I am convinced everything will happen the opposite way – people will become even angrier.

No one was afraid of their 15 days, and no one will be afraid of 60 days (of detention), but it’s a kind of classic political genre that repressive regimes, which have no political legitimacy either outside or inside the country, resort to building their legitimacy on law enforcement and criminal justice foundation, which always ends badly for them.

The main thing is to gather our strength, to be principled in our demonstrations, in our protest, and to correctly understand what the sequence should be: first, Georgia must be liberated from this regime, from Bidzina Ivanishvili’s government, and only after that can truly fair and free elections be held,” stated Petre Tsiskarishvili.
