UNM's Sanikidze states coalition government is not on current political agenda

“I did not attend yesterday’s meeting, and I believe that the coalition government is not yet on the agenda, given the current political landscape,” said Levan Sanikidze, the United National Movement (UNM) member.

According to Sanikidze, the Georgian people are focused on more pressing and broader issues than debating specific names, surnames, or who will assume particular positions.

“As for the coalition government, its significance depends on the context of upcoming elections. We are discussing new parliamentary elections—who will hold them, under what rules, and the electoral environment. We can only consider discussions about forming a coalition government once these fundamental questions are addressed.

We refrained from addressing this issue before October 26 because we believed the Georgian people’s concerns were centred on more meaningful, wide-ranging issues rather than on individual names or positions.

Of course, we recognize the importance of the Shadow Cabinet, but debating who will be appointed as ministers seems trivial when over 50 political prisoners remain behind bars, and their families are spending nights on Rustaveli Avenue,” Sanikidze emphasized.

Former President Salome Zourabichvili underscored the importance of preparing for both the upcoming elections and the post-election coalition governance following a meeting of the Resistance Platform and EU Ambassadors. “We must be ready not only for parliamentary elections but also for what follows—the formation of a coalition government,” she stated.
