UNM's Pavlenishvili: We have not disbanded; protest must be sustained and continuous, and we shall work actively towards this
“Yesterday it was demonstrated once again that the majority of the Georgian people are opposition-minded, and this contrast was clearly visible throughout the day,” declared Irakli Pavlenishvili, a member of the United National Movement, speaking about the Opposition Alliance rally.
He also stated that the Opposition Alliance plans to continue its campaign through the summer.
“Tens of thousands of Georgian citizens took part in this protest and drew great motivation from it. We intend to continue the campaign through the summer as well, including large-scale rallies. All of this must ultimately culminate in the dismantling of the anti-Georgian regime. According to information available to us, up to 50,000 Georgian citizens gathered on the streets of Tbilisi at yesterday’s rally,” Pavlenishvili declared.
Pavlenishvili also outlined the Opposition Alliance’s plans for this campaign.
“We are speaking about concrete paths, how we envisage a way out of the crisis, be it judicial reform or other measures. We shall be discussing all of this with the public as well,” Pavlenishvili stated.
Asked what Saakashvili meant by his statement that the opposition should not disband on May 26, and whether he shared that message, Pavlenishvili replied:
“We have not disbanded. The main point was that this should not have been a one-time protest; it needs to be ongoing. Overall, protests in this country must continue consistently and be sustained over time. We shall work actively in this direction.”
For reference, on May 25, former President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili wrote on social media: “The rally announced by the Alliance deserves the support of every person, whether party-affiliated or not. The most important thing is that everything that follows should be a continuation, and that we should not confine ourselves to one-off actions.”
