UNM's Pavlenishvili: Ill-treatment and erosion of democracy legitimize sanctions

“Ill-treatment and the erosion of democracy constitute legitimate grounds for sanctioning individuals,” stated Irakli Pavlenishvili, a member of the United National Movement (UNM) party.

Pavlenishvili emphasized that Europe recognizes how Georgian officials are actively working to strengthen the Russian dictatorship within Georgia.

“Ill-treatment, torture, and the undermining of democracy are valid reasons for sanctioning those complicit in this process. When we discuss Ivanishvili’s so-called law enforcers, we are referring to the individuals who orchestrate and implement these violations. It is only logical that they are being sanctioned. These individuals must understand that evading sanctions is not an option; those who assist them in circumventing these measures will also face consequences. Europe clearly observes that these officials are reinforcing the Russian dictatorship in Georgia,” he asserted.

On April 10, the UK imposed sanctions on four additional high-ranking Georgian officials, including the country’s General Prosecutor, for their roles in allowing severe human rights violations to persist in Georgia.
