UNM's Pavlenishvili highlights clear Western consensus on undermining of democracy in Georgia

“It is evident that the position of all Western institutions, without exception, is both very clear and unanimous when it comes to the ongoing developments in Georgia, including issues such as political prisoners and the broader undermining of democracy, whether involving the PACE or any other significant and authoritative institution,” Irakli Pavlenishvili, a member of the United National Movement, stated.

According to Pavlenishvili, all official statements convey a consistent message: the deterioration of democratic standards in Georgia needs to be halted.

“Our country was once regarded as part of the Western world. We held candidate status, and Europeans declared that ‘Europe is from Lisbon to Tbilisi.’ Therefore, when authoritarianism takes root in Georgia and anti-democratic laws are enacted, discussing this openly essentially means addressing an internal European issue. Unfortunately for the Georgian Dream, the decisions made by Ivanishvili and the challenges our country faces, stemming from our European aspirations, are still considered internal European matters. Consequently, European organisations, institutions, and Western bodies should have issued statements regarding the situation unfolding in Georgia,” Pavlenishvili asserted.
