UNM's Pavlenishvili condemns denial of citizens’ voting rights and passive voting ban as violations of democracy
“It is impossible to deny hundreds of thousands of Georgian citizens their right to vote. The prohibition of passive voting rights is both a crime and a violation of democratic norms,” Irakli Pavlenishvili, a member of the United National Movement, has stated in relation to the lawsuit filed with the Constitutional Court.
He pointed out that a significant portion of the population, who have participated in elections in recent years, remains denied their voting rights.
“It must be emphasised that, unfortunately, there are low expectations for any institution in Georgia, as the oligarchic regime led by Ivanishvili and his allies has infiltrated every sector. Nonetheless, we see no alternative but to pursue all available avenues. This case, in particular, should be discussed internationally, and it is crucial to exhaust all resources, including the Constitutional Court, since the lawsuit filed by Ivanishvili is inherently unconstitutional.
It is unacceptable to deny hundreds of thousands of Georgian citizens their right to vote. Moreover, the prohibition of passive voting rights is a grave violation of democratic norms, especially when it affects multiple parties. Many citizens who have voted in recent years are now deprived of this right,” Pavlenishvili said.
For context, the Unity–National Movement stated on December 13, declaring that the party had filed a lawsuit with the Constitutional Court against laws enacted by the Georgian Dream, which restrict certain individuals and political parties from engaging in political activities.
