The incumbent Chair of the United National Movement (UNM) opposition party, Nika Melia, on Monday, congratulated his challenger Levan Khabeishvili on winning the UNM leadership race.
Khabeishvili got 52.58% (21,656 votes), against Melia’s 40% (16,476 votes).
Melia pledged to stay in the party and continue fighting.
“In 2013, I deliberately joined a very large team in this fight. The goals and ambitions I set for myself in 2013 are still unreachable.
I feel the country is facing far greater issues today than in 2013. In this reality, I remain in the fight until Mikheil Saakashvili [jailed ex-president] is the Russian regime’s personal prisoner,” Melia told media outlets.
Following the elections, Giorgi Kirtadze, the Chair of the UNM office in Adjara, Bacho Dolidze, UNM’s Organizational Secretary, Akaki Minashvili, UNM’s Political Secretary and Giorgi Pataraia, Head of PR, left the posts, but claim they remain in the party.
