UNM's Chiaberashvili inquires if referendum aims to revise Constitution
“A referendum is held across the territory of Georgia, as per Article 78th of the Constitution, and Georgia has the EU candidate country status. Do we begin its revision? Whom does it suit?” said Zurab Chiaberashvili, Foreign Affairs Secretary of the United National Movement (UNM) party.
1. A referendum is held across the whole territory of Georgia. However, since 20% of Georgia’s territory has been occupied by Russia since 1990-95s, before the 2008 war and after, a plebiscite should be held instead of a referendum;
2. A plebiscite was held in 2008 with Georgian people expressing their will;
3. The Georgian Constitution has the Article 78;
4. Georgia has the European Union’s candidate country status;
5. Do we begin a revision of points 2,3 and 4? Whom does it suit?” wrote Chiaberashvili on Facebook.
Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili said at the briefing on May 28 that a referendum should be held in Georgia on whether Georgia wants a European or Russian future.
