UNM leaders meet U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson
The Chairperson of the United National Movement, Tina Bokuchava, and the party’s Secretary General, Petre Tsiskarishvili, met with U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson during their visit to Washington.
According to the party’s press service, the UNM delegation is holding a series of bilateral meetings in the U.S. Congress and Senate.
Bokuchava noted that the delegation has also met with representatives of leading think tanks and has a meeting scheduled at the U.S. State Department.
“In addition to meetings in Congress and the Senate, we’ve engaged with top-level policy-shaping think tanks. A meeting at the State Department is also planned. While Bidzina Ivanishvili is working to push Georgia off the international agenda, we are doing everything to keep Georgia in focus, particularly on the American agenda, where strategic relations can yield major benefits, such as free trade, visa liberalisation, and more.
Therefore, the only way to secure all the benefits offered by the MEGOBARI Act—beyond just sanctions against Ivanishvili and his entourage—is through a change of government. Only a return to democratic governance can restore our relations with the Trump administration. It is clear that Ivanishvili, who has collaborated with Russia, Iran, and China, has no chance of restoring relations with the Donald Trump administration,” Bokuchava concluded.
Tsiskarishvili dismissed government letters and lobbying efforts as ineffective.
“The self-proclaimed regime believes that the United States ignored or overlooked Kobakhidze’s November 28 statement about suspending European integration and that partnership with the U.S. can continue anyway. This is a delusion. Europe, the EU, and the United States share common values, so rejecting European integration also means distancing from the United States. No matter what form they take or how much the Georgian Dream spends, all those open letters are meaningless. The MEGOBARI Act has already passed Congress, the Senate will approve it, and President Trump will sign it. This legislation is a clear message of support for Georgia and includes sanctions against those obstructing democratic development,” Tsiskarishvili stated.
