Georgia’s Foreign Ministry slams PACE resolution as biased, politically motivated, and based on false narratives
“The report is not based on an objective, fact-based assessment, but rather contains biased interpretations, one-sided political judgements, and the repetition of false narratives about Georgia. This raises serious questions regarding both the impartiality of the report and the integrity of the process behind its preparation,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia stated in a response to the recent resolution passed by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
In its official statement, the Foreign Ministry reaffirmed Georgia’s readiness for mutually beneficial cooperation based on respect and trust, while noting that Tbilisi expects a constructive and fair approach from the Council of Europe’s institutions.
“On June 24, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) adopted a resolution based on a report concerning the functioning of democratic institutions in Georgia.
This report lacks an objective, fact-based foundation. Instead, it is riddled with biased interpretations, one-sided political assessments, and the recycling of false narratives about Georgia. This raises serious questions regarding both the impartiality of the document and the very process of its drafting.
It is particularly alarming that an international institution established to protect human rights, democracy, and the rule of law is increasingly being weaponised as an instrument of political pressure. Such practices damage the credibility of the Council of Europe itself and cast legitimate doubt on the impartiality of specific structures within the organisation.
We find it unacceptable to witness attempts to discredit a democratically elected government in the name of democracy, the deliberate targeting of legally functioning state institutions, and the emboldening of political groups that seek to undermine a public mandate secured through democratic elections. Rather than strengthening democracy, such an approach only deepens political polarisation and fuels radicalism.
Furthermore, a biased stance toward the internal political and legal processes of a sovereign state is entirely impermissible, as is a politically motivated assessment of legislative decisions that are enacted in full compliance with constitutional procedures and national interests. The demand to repeal laws without sound legal arguments or objective evaluation is deeply concerning; it oversteps the boundaries of the institutional mandate and bears all the hallmarks of political interference.
The Government of Georgia will steadfastly defend the country’s sovereignty, constitutional order, and the democratic choice of the Georgian people. No external political pressure, disinformation campaign, or unjust assessment will compromise Georgia’s national interests, state independence, or democratic legitimacy.
As a responsible member of the Council of Europe, deeply committed to its core values, Georgia reaffirms its readiness for mutually beneficial cooperation built on mutual respect and trust. In return, we expect a constructive, fair, and objective approach from the institutions of the Council of Europe,” reads the statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia.
