UNM Chairman calls to retract amnesty, ready to consent EU-offered bail and leave prison on this condition
Nika Melia, the Chairman of the United National Movement, addressed the representatives of the opposition who signed the European Council President Charles Michel-brokered document. Melia urges them “not to take part in the infamous attempt to rewrite history, which is called June 20 Gavrilov’s night amnesty.”
“I want to address my friends from the opposition who signed Charles Michel’s document. I would kindly ask you from the 224th cell of Rustavi Prison not to take part in any shameful attempt to rewrite history, the June 20 Gavrilov’s night amnesty.
Neither I nor anyone else merits to give at least a minimal chance to escape fair justice to guilty police officers and the order-givers of the anti-occupation protest infamous disperse.
The Georgian Dream will extend this amnesty to most and everyone, and even if you do not vote for it (which I have no doubt), you still would be discredited by this process. They will destroy you, they will damage the opposition unity, and they will ruin the country. Unfortunately, they will significantly damage the reputation of the mediators and our main friends backing them in the eyes of the Georgian people.
I repeat, nothing is more crucial today than the opposition unity. We should allow its disintegration under no circumstances. All sides should no way allow it. Therefore, I would like to ask everyone to refrain from actions that would cause irreversible damage to this unity. We must remember that unity is our only advantage against the Georgian Dream,” Melia posted on Facebook.
At the same time, Nika Melia also addressed the document-signatory Georgian Dream: “Retract the amnesty bill and withdraw it from agenda once and for all. If the amnesty can’t apply to the so-called Gavrilov protesters only, then there should be no amnesty at all. Retract amnesty, and I, Nika Melia, will take full responsibility to agree to the bail offered by the European Union and leave the prison on this condition,” Nika Melia wrote.
The Georgian political parties signed A way ahead for Georgia, a compromise document submitted to the parties by the European Council President Charles Michel, at the Orbeliani Palace on April 19.
