UN Human Rights Council adopts resolution on occupied territories of Georgia
The UN Human Rights Council on Tuesday adopted a resolution on the occupied territories of Georgia titled “Cooperation with Georgia” by a vote of 22 in favour, 4 against, and 21 abstentions.
According to the State Ministry for Reconciliation and Civic Equality, the Human Rights Council reaffirms its support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders.
“The Human Rights Council expressed serious concern over various types of discrimination against the ethnically Georgian population in the occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions and demanded immediate and unrestricted access of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and international and regional human rights mechanisms to the occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions,” reads the statement.
It went on to say that the Council emphasized the importance of the Geneva International Discussions, established on the basis of the 12 August 2008 ceasefire agreement, and underscored the role of Incident Prevention and Response Mechanisms (IPRM) in Gali and Ergneti villages.
The UN Human Rights Council instructed the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to submit oral and written reports regarding the implementation of the resolution at the next – 53rd and 54th sessions of the Council.
