TI - Georgia: Strasbourg Court accepts application against GD-adopted repressive laws

“The Strasbourg court has registered an application against the recent repressive laws adopted by the ‘Georgian Dream,’ including Ivanishvili’s FARA, to restrict Georgian civil society organizations and media,” reads the statement released by Transparency International-Georgia (TI) non-government organization.

According to the statement, the application also concerns specific actions and ongoing investigation.

“The application concerns both the repressive legislation and the specific actions initiated based on these laws – namely, the investigation launched by the Anti-Corruption Bureau against some of the applicants.

We argue that the government’s goal is not to enforce the law, but to suppress dissent and halt our activities so that we can no longer help people. These laws fundamentally contradict the freedoms of association and expression, the right to privacy, the right to a fair trial, and other rights.” reads the statement.

The application was jointly filed with the Strasbourg court by Transparency International – Georgia, Economic Policy Research Center, Rule of Law Center, Publika, Georgia’s European Orbit, and Civic Movement for Freedom.
