Thorbjørn Jagland, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, states that if Russia does not pay organizational membership dues, sanctions will be imposed against Moscow and even may be expelled from the Council of Europe.
Thorbjørn Jagland made this announcement at the Fall Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
“According to Article 9 of the Council of Europe Charter, if the state does not make payment during two years, the representative of this state can be expelled from the Committee of Ministers. If Russia does not restore payments to the Council of Europe budget in 2019, the members of the Committee should make a relevant decision” – Secretary General of the Council of Europe said.
According to him, in case if Russia makes a decision to quit the organization, then the budget of the Council of Europe should be adjusted.
