Tensions rise on Rustaveli Avenue near April 9 Memorial

On Rustaveli Avenue, near the April 9 Memorial, tensions occasionally escalate as protesters gather. The crowd erupted with shouts upon the arrival of Konstantine Zarnadze, a majoritarian MP from the Georgian Dream party, preventing him from laying flowers at the memorial. Verbal confrontations ensued, culminating in a physical altercation.

“They wouldn’t let me into the April 9 Memorial. They acted brazenly, even spitting at me. Are these normal people? What are they making the entire nation witness? I had no idea this would happen; otherwise, they would have prevented me from visiting the memorial. These are individuals from whom anything is to be expected,” Zarnadze stated.

Furthermore, several confrontations occurred between rally participants and citizens wishing to pay their respects to the heroes who fell on April 9. One rally participant urged those gathered not to succumb to provocations.

Police are present at the scene to monitor the situation.

Additionally, participants of the rally obstructed Davit Gurgenidze, the rector of the Georgian Technical University, from visiting the memorial.
