Tbilisi Mayor: Final details being finalised with tender participants for tram line design and construction; winner to be announced soon

The initial stage of reviewing the bids submitted for the design and construction of the tram line has been completed.

As Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze noted at a session of the municipal government, details are currently being clarified with the prospective contractors, after which the winning company will be announced.

“The tender for the design and construction of the tram line connecting Didi Dighomi and Didube metro station was opened on March 31 of this year. The tender is being conducted in accordance with the Asian Development Bank’s procurement rules. Four major companies, along with one joint venture, expressed their interest in participating in the tender and submitted their respective bids.

As of today, the first stage of evaluating the submitted proposals has been completed, and details are being clarified with the prospective contractors. Once the clarified information has been submitted, the winning company will be identified, with whom a contract will be signed by the end of June, and implementation of the project will commence without delay,” Kakha Kaladze noted.

Regarding the main construction parameters, the Mayor of Tbilisi stated that the tram line will start near the junction of the 3rd and 4th microdistricts in Didi Dighomi. It will run along Davit Aghmashenebeli Avenue and pass through the Dighomi residential area, ultimately connecting to the vicinity of Didube metro station.

“The approximate length of the tram line is 7.5 kilometres, along which 11 stops will be located. The project also includes the construction of a corresponding depot, designed to service and operate a fleet of 11 tram sets. The project, whose estimated cost amounts to 417 million lari, will be funded entirely from the state budget. As you are aware, the project is of historic significance, as this mode of transport is returning to the capital after many years. Furthermore, its launch and integration into the unified transport network will greatly enhance residents of Didi Dighomi’s access to other public transport. This will significantly reduce both waiting times and journey durations. I sincerely hope that this will not be the first and last tram project,” declared Kakha Kaladze.
