Tbilisi Mayor: Every nation acts in its own interest; we must pursue policies that protect Georgian statehood and sovereignty

“Every nation acts based on its own interests, which is why the United States has decided to tighten its FARA (Foreign Agents Registration Act) legislation,” Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze stated.

While speaking to the media on the matter and commenting on the Georgian opposition’s assessments of the local transparency law, Kaladze claimed that a genuine opposition does not exist in the country, leaving only a network of foreign agents, except for a few political parties.

“A true opposition does not exist in this country, if we exclude a few political parties. Instead, some foreign agents and operatives represent specific external forces. It can be said outright that they are enemies of this country and consistently act against the Georgian people. The public needs to know who is who.

As for specific laws, transparency is naturally vital to us. This is precisely why, to this day, no one has provided an answer or presented a valid argument as to why transparency is supposedly detrimental, or why it allegedly contradicts European values and European integration. Consequently, we see that America is tightening its FARA law even further. Every country acts in its own interest, and we too must act and pursue policies that, first and foremost, protect Georgian statehood, our sovereignty, independence, and the Georgian people,” the Tbilisi Mayor stated.

Furthermore, Kaladze responded to the European Parliament’s recent resolution, describing it as entirely devoid of fairness.

“We have seen this type of resolution many times before. They truly hold no value, as they are completely empty of justice and truth, consisting solely of lies, falsehoods, and threat-based statements. We know exactly what the goal behind this is; they are doing everything they can to trigger unrest in the country, orchestrate a revolution, and install their subordinates in power, who will execute their orders and take steps against the country without question,” Kaladze noted.

For context, the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee has approved a bill aimed at closing loopholes in FARA to counter foreign adversaries seeking to influence US policy.
