Tbilisi Botanic Garden celebrates 180 years since official recognition as botanical garden

On May 1, 1845—exactly 180 years ago—the former royal garden was officially designated a botanical garden by decree of the Crown Prince of the Caucasus and named the “Tiflis Botanical Garden,” announced the Georgian National Botanic Garden on the occasion of the 180th anniversary of Plant Diversity Study and Preservation.

According to the statement, the garden continuously evolves each year, expanding its plant collection, organizing scientific expeditions in collaboration with both local and international partners, and broadening cultural and educational initiatives.

Since 1998, the Tbilisi Botanic Garden has been a proud member of Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI). In 2018, the garden underwent a major renovation, which included the addition of cycling and walking paths, with part of the funding provided by the Kartu Foundation.

Today, the garden spans 161 hectares and boasts a collection of over 3,500 plant species, including a diverse array of shrubs and flowers.
