State Dept Spox: Russia must withdraw forces, revoke recognition of Abkhazia/Tskhinvali regions
During a press briefing on Wednesday, US State Department spokesperson Ned Price reflected on Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko’s visit to the occupied Abkhazia region, saying Russia must withdraw its forces to pre-conflict positions and reverse its recognition of Georgia’s Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions.
“We remain steadfast in our support for Georgia and for its territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. We believe that Russia must be held accountable for the commitments it made under the 2008 ceasefire. Russia must withdraw its forces to pre-conflict positions and reverse its recognition of Georgia’s Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions,” Ned Price said.
The Georgian Foreign Ministry summoned the Ambassador of Belarus to Georgia following the visit of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko to the occupied Abkhazia region. As previously reported, Alexander Lukashenko arrived in occupied Abkhazia and met with its de facto leader Aslan Bzhania in Bichvinta.
