Speaker: Stats contradict embassy claims; EU rejects more Georgians from entry than Georgia does

“Yesterday, the embassies of Poland and France, members of the Weimar Triangle, issued warnings to their citizens to ‘think twice’ before coming to Georgia, allegedly due to a large number of border entry refusals at Georgia’s border,” writes Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on social media.

As Papuashvili emphasizes, it is deeply concerning that, following failed attempts to target Georgian politics, we now face threats against Georgia’s economy.

“Tourism is vital for improving our people’s welfare, and baseless attacks on it undermine both Georgian interests and national well-being. The reality, however, starkly contrasts with the perceptions these statements attempt to create. Fortunately, border crossings are governed by facts, not perceptions. Statistics reveal a clear disconnect, showing that Poland, France, and the EU overall deny more border crossings to Georgians than vice versa.

In 2024-2025, Georgia refused border crossing to a total of 9 Polish citizens, while Poland refused 1,250 Georgian citizens, meaning Poland had 140 times more border crossing refusals.

In 2024-2025, Georgia refused border crossing to a total of 16 French citizens, while France refused 145 Georgian citizens, meaning France had 9 times more border crossing refusals.

In 2024-2025, Georgia refused border crossing to a total of 184 EU citizens, while EU countries refused 4,825 Georgian citizens, meaning EU countries had 26 times more border crossing refusals.

Furthermore, in 2024-2025, Poland deported 249 Georgian citizens, France deported 280, and the EU as a whole deported 2,463 from their countries. This indicates that Georgia still has a considerable distance to close in aligning with the border refusal practices common across the EU. Embassies must adhere to the Vienna Convention and refrain from disseminating information that fosters false perceptions about the host countries.
