Speaker Papuashvili: No one expects Brussels to change, but Georgia will remain living proof of its hypocrisy

“No one expects today’s Brussels to change its behaviour any more,” Shalva Papuashvili, Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, wrote on social media.

Papuashvili said that for seven years Brussels has watched not only violence but attempts to overthrow the government, and has not once condemned the violence.

“‘We condemn the violence in Tirana and other Albanian cities, including the setting fire to buildings, attacks on state institutions and destruction of public and private property.’ That was the European Commission’s 18 October statement on the events in Albania. We expected the same kind of statement from the EU, when:

On 20 June 2019, the collective United National Movement tried to storm Parliament and topple the government.

In November 2020, the collective United National Movement, having lost the elections, tried to storm the Central Election Commission, derail the elections and overthrow the government.

In March 2021, the collective United National Movement barricaded itself inside the party’s headquarters with the wanted Nika Melia and threatened to overthrow the government.

In June 2022, the collective United National Movement and foreign-controlled NGOs tried to topple the government.

In April 2023, during an attempt by the collective United National Movement and foreign-controlled NGOs to overthrow the government, someone tried, for the first time in Georgia’s history, to burn a person alive with a Molotov cocktail.

In October 2024, the collective United National Movement, having lost the elections, and foreign-controlled NGOs tried to storm the Parliament building and topple the government.

In October 2025, the collective United National Movement and foreign-controlled NGOs tried to derail the local elections, storm the Presidential Palace and overthrow the government.

For seven years Brussels has watched not only violence but attempts to overthrow the government, and not once (I stress, not once) has it condemned that violence. On the contrary, after every failed attempt at violence and at toppling the government, Brussels attacked Georgia, thereby covering up the responsibility of the violent groups. As one well-known old card put it, ‘It’s all clear.’ It has all been clear for a long time.

No one expects today’s Brussels to change its behaviour. But against the backdrop of events around the world, Georgia will always remain living proof of Brussels’ hypocrisy and double standards.

This time, let us recall what President Macron said when Georgian police officers were being attacked, and people were trying to topple Georgia, and what he says now that French police officers are being attacked and people are trying to topple France,” Papuashvili wrote.
