Speaker Papuashvili: For Georgia MPs in Parliament must realise that fleeing Gakharia is mocking them by pushing themes that backfire
“Members of the For Georgia faction previously initiated a proposal regarding demonstrations which, above all, implicates their own fugitive leader. He is fleeing an investigation that concerns violence against demonstrators,” stated the Speaker of the Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili.
A journalist had asked Papuashvili: “The party ‘Gakharia For Georgia’ is initiating a draft amendment to the Law on Assemblies and Manifestations, which calls for the restoration of the legal status quo that existed before 2024. What does this indicate to you?”
In response, the Speaker of the Parliament remarked that the party’s members are raising issues that ultimately work against them.
“I think the people sitting in Parliament under the banner of the For Georgia party need to reflect and realise that a fleeing Gakharia is simply mocking them from afar. He is making them initiate topics that damage and work against their own interests.
Not long ago, they initiated a motion concerning demonstrations. This, first and foremost, touches upon their own leader, who is on the run, and he is specifically fleeing an investigation into violence against demonstrators. Giorgi Gakharia stands exposed; those tragic events that occurred during the dispersal of the demonstration took place under his direct leadership. A judicial investigation is underway; this man has fled, so why on earth do these people keep bringing up these specific issues?
Where exactly have they seen expression being suppressed? If anything, in Georgia, opinions that defy common sense and cross into outright insult are in abundant supply across our media landscape,” Papuashvili stated.
