Speaker: OSCE PA President reiterates ODIHR conclusion that Georgia has elected gov't, time to look forward

“The visit of the delegation of the President and members of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly aims to continue dialogue on issues that some radical political groups in Georgia and abroad are using to discredit the country,” Shalva Papuashvili, Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, said.

Papuashvili made the remarks to journalists following a meeting with the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly delegation.

According to him, it is important that the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and its new leadership continue the approach expected from a security organization.

“The President of the Parliamentary Assembly reiterated the conclusions of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR) Election Observation Mission regarding the 2024 elections. As you remember, the main conclusion voiced by the Head of Mission in 2024 was that Georgia has an elected government and that it is important to look ahead,” Papuashvili said.

He added that, despite earlier statements from the European Union that the OSCE election observation mission’s conclusions would serve as a guideline, relations with Georgia did not continue on that basis.

“Instead, we saw attempts from Brussels to encourage a radical agenda. We also saw certain foreign political groups and even some countries encouraging activities aimed at undermining democracy in Georgia, denying democratic processes and, ultimately, supporting the violent overthrow of the government. On October 4, we witnessed support from some foreign political groups, including the leaders of certain countries, for such actions,” Papuashvili said.

The Speaker emphasized that Georgia remains an active member of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and expressed hope that the organization’s new leadership will continue to promote constructive dialogue.

“In this regard, we are fully prepared,” Papuashvili said.

A senior delegation of parliamentarians from the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, led by Pere Joan Pons Sampietro, President of the Assembly, is visiting Georgia from March 8 to 10.
