Speaker: NGO sector staffed by former officials of Saakashvili's gov't

“The civic society is full of people, who served in top positions at public institutions, were ministers or deputy ministers,” said Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili.

The Speaker remarked on the statement of the Strategic Analysis Center founder, Nodar Kharshiladze, saying the Georgian Dream (GD) “turned lazy and if the opposition was stronger, it could have a chance in the elections, by demonstrating no unity, Ivanishvili has the chance to survive.”

According to the Speaker, such a statement “sounds as directly menacing” and is the result of the NGO sector being staffed by former high-ranking officials and political leaders of the United National Movement (UNM) party. He reminded that Nodar Kharshiladze served as deputy minister of internal affairs and defence.

“Imagining that this person represents the civic society is cynical and is the continuation of what the UNM officials did in their office. Such utterings are not accidental. The problem is that such people receive foreign financing, including from different embassies, and the embassies portray them as being a civic society or NGO sector,” he said.

The Speaker believes that the former UNM officials aim to “execute the vendetta, which they have in mind” in case they come back into power.
