Speaker: Former ombudsman's NGO received instant EU funding, fueling suspicions of corruption

“While serving as Public Defender, Nino Lomjaria compiled a counterfeit conclusion regarding Mikheil Saakashvili’s health state, which was used as justification by Brussels when it sent the EU Ambassador on a demarche to the Minister of Justice and demanded Saakashvili’s extradition,” wrote Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili in his social network post.

According to Papuashvili, following resignation, Nino Lomjaria established a non-governmental organisation, which instantly received millions of Georgian lari in funding from Brussels.

“This individual, when serving as Public Defender, compiled a counterfeit conclusion regarding Mikheil Saakashvili’s health state, demanding postponement of imprisonment to Saakashvili or the possibility of freeing him from jail. Brussels used this counterfeit document as justification when it sent the EU Ambassador on a demarche to the Minister of Justice and demanded Saakashvili’s extradition.

Following her resignation, Nino Lomjaria established a non-governmental organisation, which instantly received millions of Georgian lari in funding from Brussels. She unlawfully spent this money on a pre-election campaign and then made false assessments about the 2024 elections.

It is precisely these facts that strengthen the suspicion that EU grants are being awarded for corrupt purposes, and that the main reason for Brussels’ opposition to the Transparency Law is the fear of exposing political and financial corruption,” writes Shalva Papuashvili.
