Speaker: EU integration should be tool of consensus, but it was used by some internal, external groups as tool of pressure, polarization

In an interview with GPB First Channel, Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili said, “We have seen what it means to use the European integration process as a weapon.”

The Speaker believes “It should be an instrument of consent, and some internal and external groups have used it as a tool of pressure, interference, division, and polarization.”

He claimed that the GD’s recent statement was designed to “disarm certain groups so that they would not have weapons to influence our society.”

Papuashvili mentioned recent visits by Eastern European politicians, alleging that they “set conditions for us, what we should or should not do.” “Instead of talking to us about integration-related topics, they discuss things that are not related to it, among them, the law on family values and the transparency law.”

“Opening negotiations is not something that will be opened once and closed after some time, as if there are only two decisions to be made. Both require unanimity. We will have 35 such opening negotiations; because there are 35 chapters in the accession process, this choice should be taken 25 times: opening, implementation, and closing.

The hysteria that they want to sow and use as a weapon, imagine that these groups inside and outside who want to interfere in Georgia’s internal affairs will use it 70 times like this.

That’s why we stated, “We will do this work ourselves, we know the obligations, and it’s written down what needs to be done until 2027,” Papuashvili explained.
