Speaker describes U.S. Embassy's statement on Ivanishvili as 'strange'
“The U.S. Embassy’s statement released on Facebook after President Trump’s congratulatory letter seems somewhat unusual to me,” the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, stated.
“The statement appears to be from a few days ago, yet it was published the day after President Trump’s congratulatory message. Honestly, I am unsure of the purpose behind this statement,” he stated.
President Donald Trump sent a congratulatory letter to President Mikheil Kavelashvili on Georgia’s Independence Day. In the letter, published by the Georgian President’s press office, Trump reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening peaceful and productive relations with Georgia.
The U.S. Embassy in Georgia issued a statement indicating that, at the request of Secretary of State Rubio, Ambassador Dunnigan sought a meeting with Bidzina Ivanishvili on May 22. However, Ivanishvili declined to meet with the ambassador.
