Speaker believes election threshold topic should be closed

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili believes that the topic of the election threshold should be closed.

According to the Speaker, six opposition parties declared that they have no problem with overcoming the 5% barrier, while others even demand its increase.

Shalva Papuashvili remarked that five parties managed to overcome the 5% barrier in the recently held elections in Poland, therefore, the opposition parties should prepare for the elections.

“What is decisive is not the barrier but the will of the people. Whatever the will of the people has been for the past ten years, it will once again manifest in 2024. Georgian people will not support anti-Georgian platforms. I cannot explain otherwise and when they fight against Georgia, the Georgian people will not support them. This is an axiom and elementary certainty,” he said.

Pawel Herczynski, EU Ambassador to Georgia on November 21 said that “election threshold rules should be introduced as quickly as possible to ensure a level playing field for everyone.”
