Speaker announces parliament’s plans to establish public inquiry into food price formation as spring session begins

“The Prime Minister of Georgia’s focus on such a vital issue as retail food prices, which is a matter of paramount concern for citizens, is most welcome,” wrote Shalva Papuashvili, Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, on social media.

As Papuashvili explains, once the spring session commences, Parliament will establish a dedicated commission to investigate the process of food price formation.

“Following the Prime Minister’s remarks, preliminary research has already begun. The problem areas have been identified, and the investigation is underway.

The idea of forming a parliamentary commission in an open, transparent manner was also discussed as a key approach, allowing the public to observe the process of retail price-setting and identify any potential shortcomings.

An open, democratic process fosters an informed citizenry that understands the issues at hand, engages in meaningful discussions, and participates actively in decision-making.

As soon as the spring session begins, the Parliament of Georgia will establish a special commission and initiate a public inquiry into how food prices are determined,” Papuashvili states.
