Slovakia sets example of true European values, President Kavelashvili says

“The idea behind the creation of the European Union was based on equality and mutual respect. Unfortunately, European bureaucracy often makes mistakes in its approach toward us. Slovakia stands out as an exemplary country that adheres to these principles,” Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili said at a joint briefing with Slovak President Peter Pellegrini.

According to Kavelashvili, while Georgia aspires to join the European Union, it remains essential to safeguard national interests and sovereignty.

“We discussed the EU’s approach. Both of our countries share deep respect for common values. The idea of the EU was a peaceful one, grounded in economic development, equality, justice, and mutual respect. Georgia remains committed to these values. For us, Slovakia is an example of a country that upholds these principles. Our people look with hope to Slovakia’s role within the EU. We once again reaffirm our strong desire to become a member of the European Union; however, national interests, sovereignty, and the principle of justice must be protected,” Kavelashvili said.

He also noted that Georgia remains open to dialogue with the EU.

“We are not afraid of negotiations. We are always ready for fair and constructive dialogue, but such a process requires willingness from both sides. Unfortunately, the Brussels bureaucracy often acts differently. Still, there is a group of countries that gives us hope, and Slovakia is among the leading ones. We value their consistent support,” Kavelashvili added.
