Russian Foreign Ministry responds to Nauru severing ties with occupied Abkhazia: Motives for this decision are incomprehensible to us

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation has responded to the Republic of Nauru’s decision to terminate relations with occupied Abkhazia.

“As you know, Russia never meddles in the internal affairs of independent states. For our part, we note that the motives behind this decision remain incomprehensible to the Russian side,” representatives at the Russian Foreign Ministry noted in response to an inquiry from Russian media.

The Russian Foreign Ministry further contended that the severance of diplomatic relations would contribute neither to expanding the island republic’s geographic reach nor to enhancing the quality of its engagement with the wider world.

For context, the Republic of Nauru revoked diplomatic ties with Georgia’s occupied South Ossetia and Abkhazia. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, the executive body of the Republic of Nauru formally adopted the decision on July 21, 2026.
