Rikard Jozwiak: EU already suspended possibility for any progress on EU accession long time ago. Georgia will likely remain candidate country, however

Europe Editor for Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty, Rikard Jozwiak, said, “Just hot air from the Georgian government. The EU already suspended the possibility for any progress on EU accession a long time ago.”

“Georgia will likely remain a candidate country, however. The only country that had this revoked was Iceland after it asked the EU for it in 2015, 6 years after applying to join,” Jozwiak wrote on X.

Today, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced a decision not to place the issue of opening accession negotiations with the EU on the agenda until the end of 2028. “We will also reject any budgetary grants from the EU until that time. By the end of 2028, Georgia will be economically ready to initiate negotiations for EU membership in 2030.”
