Resolutions on Georgia used for spreading unverified allegations damage trust in the OSCE, warns MP Levan Makhashvili

“The credibility of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly is not an abstract asset; it is the very foundation of our relevance. When we allow Georgia-related issues to be framed through the short-term political headlines rather than verified facts, we do more than distort reality: we erode the institution we serve,” MP Levan Makhashvili stated during his speech at the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly in The Hague.

According to Makhashvili, the OSCE/ODIHR observation mission did not find that the elections in Georgia were rigged. Despite this, he argued, the Assembly is intent on falsifying the OSCE/ODIHR’s own conclusions.

The Moscow Mechanism report didn’t conclude anything other than pointing to allegations. Yet, this Assembly is about to claim them as proven facts. – Proper accountability has been established both for violent protestors and riot policemen in Georgia. Yet, this Assembly is about to claim that it was “peaceful” demonstrators who burned parliament, attacked the presidential palace and injured hundreds of policemen.

Such excessive politicisation turns the OSCE bodies and instruments from a platform for security and cooperation into a stage for selective outrage and political revenge. Double standards do not strengthen the OSCE PA; they hollow it out. When resolutions on Georgia become vehicles of unverified claims or one-sided interpretations, we forfeit the trust of those who look to the OSCE as an impartial actor and honest broker. Countries begin to see our Assembly not as a guardian of shared principles, but as an amplifier of select political agendas.

The result is reduced participation, diminished compliance, and step-by-step marginalisation. We weaken the legitimacy of the very organisation we claim to defend.
