Reports indicate opposition figure Gia Baramidze detained by law enforcement

Unconfirmed reports indicate that law enforcement officers have detained Gia Baramidze, a senior leader of the opposition United National Movement (UNM) party.

Government authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the arrest.

The detention is believed to be linked to an ongoing criminal investigation launched on 7 August 2026 under statutory articles governing treason and sabotage. The probe was initiated after Baramidze publicly alleged that Georgian combatants executed prisoners of war during the 1992–1993 War in Abkhazia.
