World Refugee Day is marked today. The office of Georgian Public Defender released information in that regard based on which the number of asylum seekers increases in Georgia.

About 1500 people in Georgia are refugee or humanitarian status holders. The majority of them are citizens of Russia, Iraq, Ukraine and Syria.

“Protection of human rights of refugee or asylum seekers is one of the main priorities of activities of Office of Public Defender. Georgian Ombudsman joins marking of World Refugee Day and expresses hope that contribution to long-term decision-making in resolution of their problems will be ensured,” reads the information.

World Refugee Day, observed June 20 each year, is dedicated to raising awareness of the situation of refugees throughout the world.
