Putin lost war but won elections in Georgia in 2012, ex-Interior Minister Merabishvili says

Do you know what happened in Georgia? Putin was very fortunate in 2012 since he lost the war but won the elections and did not have to conduct hostilities in Georgia, Georgia’s former Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili told Mark Feygin during his Feygin Live programme.

“The fact that Russia has no chance of political triumph in Ukraine is a guarantee of Ukraine’s actual independence,” he said. “This is something we must do in the future.”

“Do you know what happened in Georgia? Putin (Russia’s President) was extremely fortunate in 2012 since he lost the war but won the elections. His aggressive campaign was prompted by another revolution [in Ukraine], in which he lost President Yanukovych. He did not need to launch military operations in Georgia since he won the elections. Russia’s lack of political success in Ukraine secures Ukraine’s actual independence. It is something we must accomplish in the future,” Vano Merabishvili stated.
