Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky held a telephone conversation about the odds of a meeting of the Normandy Format to seek a solution on the conflict in Donbass.

Both statesmen discussed the compliance of the agreed commitments in the Final Declaration of the Format summit in Paris, comprised of Russia, France, Germany and Ukraine, on December 9, noted a report by the Ukrainian presidency, cited by the capital’s TV.

Kyiv affirms to have tackled on the phone conversation the feasible release of prisoners and Ukrainian citizens arrested by Russia.

This Wednesday, the signing of Minsk-2 agreements fulfilled five years, these were the continuity of a Protocol and Declaration approved in September 2014, with the participation of the heads of Russia, Ukraine and Germany.

Kyiv assumed in December commitments emanating from the Final Communiqué of the Paris summit, including the immediate cessation of hostilities, prisoners’ exchange and the separation of forces in the confrontation line.

The first two commitments were relatively implemented by Ukraine in due time before the end of 2019, but the separation of forces was never carried out in two new locations in Donbass.

At least 13,000 people died in the conflict in southeastern Ukraine, according to UN data. Among those victims, rebel authorities identify over 6,500 civilians.
