President Kavelashvili: Georgia not to give up choice to live in democratic, peaceful state

“The voices of Georgian diplomats that Georgia will never give up sovereignty and its choice to live in a free, democratic and peaceful state, should be heard loudly in the international arena,” said Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili, addressing the event dedicated to Diplomat’s Day.

According to Kavelashvili, diplomats hold a special role in safeguarding national interests.

“This day is symbolic since it is linked to the name of the Georgian prominent writer, public figure and diplomat Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani. Since 2020, it has become a welcoming tradition to honour experienced diplomats – those who have shown special merit towards our country and its people – with the Sulkhan-Saba Award on Diplomacy Day.

It is also symbolic that today’s event is dedicated to the memory of Akaki Chkhenkeli, Ambassador Plenipotentiary of the First Democratic Republic of Georgia to France.

This year, for the first time, Georgian Diplomats will be awarded the Akaki Chkhenkeli Award. Today, as international relations become increasingly tense worldwide, your role as diplomats in defending our national interests on the global stage is more crucial than ever. A strong diplomatic corps, vigilant in safeguarding the interests of the state, is one of the key guarantees of a strong nation,” he said.

In his speech, the Georgian President emphasised that the work of diplomats is of strategic importance for establishing and strengthening Georgia’s economic and cultural ties with various countries.

“You are the individuals who protect and strengthen our country’s position in the international arena, confirming that we are a small but worthy nation with rich history, culture and traditions. Amid a complex geopolitical situation, your professionalism and unconditional loyalty to the motherland are especially significant for each Georgian. Your activities are strategically important in terms of establishing and strengthening Georgia’s economic and cultural relations with various countries,” he said.

President Kavelashvili emphasised that, alongside a sense of responsibility, it is a great honour to serve one’s people and nation, and to uphold and protect the best interests of the country.

“I am proud that such professionals represent Georgia in different countries. The voices of Georgian diplomats, who will never relinquish sovereignty or the country’s right to live in a free, democratic, and peaceful state, must be heard loudly and clearly on the international stage. This is your mission, and I believe you will fulfil your duties in compliance with your commitment to professional standards.

In conclusion, with special respect, I would like to congratulate the laureates of the departmental awards of Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani and Akaki Chkhenkeli. I congratulate you on Professional Day and wish you success in your future endeavours,” he said.

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze and representatives of the legislative and executive authorities, Georgian Orthodox Church and Diplomatic Corps attended the event.
