President: Foreign-linked forces tried to overthrow government, violent actions will not be tolerated

“Yesterday, Georgia held elections in compliance with the highest democratic standards,” President Mikheil Kavelashvili stated at a briefing at the Presidential Administration. He thanked the Election Commission of Georgia and its employees for their professionalism and congratulated the ruling Georgian Dream party on its victory.

“I would like to thank all political parties that participated in the elections for mobilizing voters and demonstrating responsibility toward the state. I congratulate the winning party, its representatives, and candidates on their success, and wish them the best,” Kavelashvili said.

The President also addressed the unrest that occurred in Tbilisi during a rally held in parallel with the elections.

“Unfortunately, a parallel action aimed at overthrowing the government was underway. Our society witnessed acts of vandalism and destructive calls. Despite the high standards of Georgian citizens, there are still actors in Georgia operating on instructions from foreign special services. The public saw their behavior firsthand: they damaged the fence around a well-known city landmark I pass almost every day — a site enjoyed by many residents and tourists. No one should tolerate such violent acts near the Presidential Administration. I reiterate: yesterday, forces organized by foreign special services urged Georgian citizens to overthrow the government.  Such violent actions will not be tolerated, and there will be a strict response,” he stressed.

Kavelashvili reiterated that the Georgian people would not allow a change of government through violence.

“Yesterday, when I cast my vote, I noted that our society, since the restoration of independence, has shown political maturity and a clear understanding that power must be changed only through democratic means. This was once again demonstrated in these elections. I thank our citizens for their wisdom and awareness. I believe in my people, and I am confident that these destructive attempts will remain in the past. The state will act firmly, and I call on all institutions to respond strictly to such incidents,” the President concluded.
