PM: Ultimatums placing traditional values on one side and EU integration on other unacceptable
“Ultimatums placing traditional and family values, as well as the interests of minors, on one side and European integration on the other are unacceptable,” Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze told journalists
According to him, such dilemmas should not be used in public discourse.
“We do not believe that society should be confronted with the choice of either rejecting European integration or abandoning traditional values. This is neither correct nor healthy,” Kobakhidze said.
Responding to a question about the Neutral Georgia initiative to hold a plebiscite on repealing laws on family values and transparency, the Prime Minister noted that a poll can be held on any topic.
“I don’t have a specific position on this issue. In general, we should consult the public on all important decisions, but I cannot comment further on this particular case today,” he stated.
Kobakhidze stressed that the laws on family values and transparency are effective and prevent potential risks.
“We see concerning global trends, including how propaganda negatively impacts statistics. These laws were adopted to protect our country and society from such risks. If they were irrelevant, there wouldn’t be such strong opposition to them. Their effectiveness is precisely why those engaged in harmful propaganda, both in Georgia and abroad, are so worried. These laws must remain in force,” he said.
