PM: September 27 reminds us of Abkhazia tragedy, Georgian people's heroism
“Today we commemorate heroes fallen in Abkhazia. We remember the Abkhazia tragedy,” said Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze in connection with the 32nd anniversary of the fall of Sokhumi, visiting Heroes Square at the memorial of heroes fallen in the fight for Georgia’s territorial integrity.
According to the PM, this day is a reminder of Georgian heroism.
“Today we commemorate heroes fallen in Abkhazia, we remember the Abkhazia tragedy. These were tragic events, and this day reminds us of the heroism of many Georgians. At the same time, it reminds us of our responsibility to strive for the fulfilment of the aim for which these heroes sacrificed their lives. This aim is the restoration of Georgia’s territorial integrity peacefully. This is our responsibility before our heroes,” he said.
Today, Georgia commemorates the 32nd anniversary of the fall of Sokhumi, the Russian-occupied Abkhazia region.
The military confrontation in Abkhazia lasted 13 months and 13 days and ended on September 27, 1993, with the fall of Sokhumi and the defeat of the Georgian Armed Forces.
The war left over 10,000 Georgian soldiers and civilians killed and 300,000 people internally displaced.
