PM says agreement over cheap gas with Azerbaijan extended under appropriate conditions
“We closely cooperate with Azerbaijan. We are linked with a number of strategic projects, including alongside Turkiye, and we will continue cooperation in the future,” said Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, delivering an annual report in the parliament.
According to the PM, Georgia’s two main sources og gas supply are Russia and Azerbaijan, though the agreement concluded with Azerbaijan ensures that it would be the primary importer of gas.
“These agreements concern guarantees over the volume and price. It was incorrectly said that the share of Gazprom allegedly increased by 40%. The share has not increased by even a third, I can tell you this with complete certainty. As for what we signed with Azerbaijan, is this a new agreement or an extension – perhaps the question was about the agreement related to cheap gas. This is, in fact, a continuation of a 20-year agreement, and it was extended under similar conditions.
There was disquiet over the cheap gas agreement with Azerbaijan; some threatened that it would be difficult for us to extend the agreement, but it was extended under appropriate conditions, and my gratitude to both the Ministry of Economy and our Azerbaijani friends. Whether these agreements entail the surrender of our transportation potential or not, absolutely not. We closely cooperate with Azerbaijan. We are linked with a number of strategic projects, including alongside Turkiye, and we will continue cooperation in the future,” he said.
