PM offers support to parents of children with Achondroplasia, promises to fund medication once approved
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garbashvili on Monday addressed the protest of parents of children diagnosed with Achondroplasia, emphasizing that the state supports them and will do everything possible to help them.
According to him, the government needs more time to resolve this issue so that children with Achondroplasia do not end with worse effects. Garibashvili stated that the World Health Organization does not recommend using this medicine [Vosoritide] for the time being.
“Georgia does not refuse to fund medicines for children with Achondroplasia, but we must wait. We will wait a few months, have constant information, and join this program as soon as this issue is resolved, as soon as several countries begin treatment with guidelines,” he said.
At the same time, Garibashvili criticized opposition politicians for launching a political campaign on this topic.
“I’d like to urge them to stop using parents and their children for narrow, biased interests,” he added.
Parents of children with Achondroplasia continued to rally outside the government administration, asking for a meeting with the Prime Minister; they strongly objected to the PM’s comments.
