“Defending peace is the key priority for us, and peaceful development stands on army and defence capabilities. Veterans know best the price and significance of war and peace. Using your military knowledge, sharing your invaluable experience with future generations is vital,” said Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze addressing an event dedicated to Veterans Day.

According to the PM, more than 4,000 individuals have undergone training through a volunteer organization established to support the principle of total defence. Furthermore, a pilot discipline titled “Defence and Security” is being introduced in schools, for which 18 veterans have completed specialized training.

Through the education program, the government covered 50% of tuition fees for veterans and their children, with a total of 8.6 million GEL allocated. Children with disabilities will receive education grants.

We have corrected a legislative discrepancy. Those who fought on the territory of other states are exempted from taxes on up to 3,000 GEL of their annual taxable income. Displaced veterans are awarded additional points when applying for housing. Free legal service and annual material assistance for blind veterans have come into effect.

Transport concessions are already in effect in Tbilisi and major municipalities, as well as on Georgian Railways. Work is ongoing to extend a similar approach nationwide. Naturally, the government will continue to care for veterans in the future.

Protecting historical memory is a key responsibility. The nation, which does not remember its heroes, will not be able to build a better future. Therefore, the government takes steps to immortalize heroes; tens of streets were named after them.

Dear Veterans, members of heroes’ families! Once again, congratulations on this day and thank you for serving the motherland. I wish you peace, prosperity and long life,” he said.
