PM Kobakhidze: Staging rallies at home to trigger sanctions abroad is pure treason

“Staging protests domestically to trigger sanctions from abroad, meaning you assemble 150 men inside the country just to manufacture a backdrop for hostile operations outside, is the very definition of treason against one’s own nation,” the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, stated in response to press questions regarding a statement made earlier today by Nika Gvaramia, a leader of the Opposition Alliance.

Specifically, Gvaramia had written: “The opposition’s strategy has been clearly stated: domestic protests, international sanctions, and a viable alternative.”

According to Kobakhidze, the public delivered a fitting rebuke to this treacherous approach during the 2024–2025 elections, though he added that this alone is not sufficient.

“As you are aware, a criminal case has already been opened concerning this very strategy; this treacherous stance, which is, in the broadest sense, a criminal modus operandi. We shall see how the investigative bodies ultimately classify it, but this is the absolute betrayal of one’s own country. It is a very simple logic upon which their criminal, anti-state, and treacherous activities are built. Naturally, this demands an appropriate response.

You know that we have drafted a lawsuit for the Constitutional Court. This exact strategy, protests from within, sanctions from without, only reinforces the case we have filed. This is an overt, hostile attitude towards one’s own people, state, and country, and it requires a definitive countermeasure. I will say it again: the public gives a fitting answer to this approach at every turn, but it now requires a proper legal response as well,” Irakli Kobakhidze declared.
