PM Kobakhidze outlines USD7bn transport infrastructure development strategy
“Today, as global transport routes shift and interest in the Middle Corridor continues to grow, the role of our railway becomes ever more vital. A modernised, efficient, and seamlessly functioning rail network presents Georgia with an opportunity to solidify its position as a key regional transit hub,” stated Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze during his address at the Railway Workers’ Day ceremony.
According to the Head of Government, investment in the country’s overall transport infrastructure will reach 7 billion US dollars by 2032.
“I warmly congratulate you on today’s occasion. I am delighted that our tradition continues, allowing us to gather once again to mark this exceptional day. The history of Georgian Railway spans 154 years, beginning in 1872 when the first train departed from Poti for Tbilisi. For over a century and a half, the railway has remained an indispensable pillar of our nation’s economic development and one of Georgia’s primary arterial transit lines.
Today, as transport routes transform and interest in the Middle Corridor expands, the railway’s role has grown even more critical. A modernised, efficient, and seamlessly functioning rail network gives Georgia the scope to further reinforce its transit standing.
Developing our transport infrastructure remains one of our highest priorities. Seven billion US dollars will be invested across the entire transport sector between now and 2032. Alongside ports, motorways, and airports, revitalising and expanding our rail network stands at the very heart of this vision.
Late last year marked the completion of the historic modernisation of Georgia’s main rail line, which effectively doubled its throughput capacity and significantly reduced transit times. Furthermore, we have brought the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars line to completion, enabling full-scale operational service along this key corridor,” the Prime Minister noted.
