PM Kobakhidze on Joe Wilson: Bizarre statements point to hidden motives behind US politician’s anti-Georgia stance
“While the presumption of innocence must be respected, the sheer volume of absurd statements made by Congressman Joe Wilson regarding Georgia suggests underlying motives that an American investigation will ultimately bring to light,” Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze told journalists today.
The Prime Minister’s remarks came in response to press inquiries following revelations of an FBI corruption probe involving US lawmakers.
“We must uphold the presumption of innocence; however, when a specific individual, a politician, makes such a series of absurd statements, for instance regarding Georgia, it is obvious that there must be something driving it. The relevant US authorities will determine exactly what lay behind these actions.
We have also seen specific politicians named in connection with commercial lobbying contracts, which represents a flawed practice. In our view, this constitutes corrupt practice that is entirely unacceptable,” the Prime Minister stated.
The statement follows an investigative report by ProPublica, which revealed that the FBI had been probing prospective corrupt transactions involving the late Senator Lindsey Graham, alongside Congressmen James Clyburn and Joe Wilson.
