PM Kobakhidze: Irakli Garibashvili's principled decision against sanctions three years ago enabled us to strengthen peace
“We all remember Irakli Garibashvili’s momentous statement from three years ago. It was a historic decision,” Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze told journalists.
Kobakhidze emphasized that at that time, there was a concerted effort to escalate tensions in Georgia, aiming to draw the nation into the military conflict that had erupted in Ukraine.
“Our decisions were crucial in ensuring that Georgia did not become a second front in this conflict. Among those, the principled choice against the imposition of sanctions was the most significant. Imposing sanctions would have led to further escalation—a scenario our adversaries sought—and would have also precipitated a collapse of our economy. Naturally, we could not take that step.
I want to reiterate that a principled decision was made at that time, voiced by Irakli Garibashvili. As a result, we have maintained a steadfast position focused on reinforcing peace in Georgia,” stated Irakli Kobakhidze.
