PM Kobakhidze: First presidential visit from Serbia can be hailed as watershed moment for bilateral relations

“The first presidential visit from the Serbian side to our country can be hailed as a watershed moment for our bilateral relations,” stated the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, during a joint press briefing with the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić.

According to Kobakhidze, this visit will inject fresh momentum into Georgian-Serbian relations and further deepen these ties across all areas.

“It is a particular honour for us to host the President of the Republic of Serbia, Mr Aleksandar Vučić, today. At a time when contemporary global politics is experiencing a deficit of leadership, Serbia possesses an outstanding leader who resolutely champions the defence and reinforcement of his country’s sovereignty and independence, and does his utmost for the well-being of the Serbian people. Consequently, it is an exceptional privilege for us to welcome Mr Aleksandar Vučić, the President of Serbia, today.

It is noteworthy that this marks the first presidential visit from Serbia to our country, which can be viewed as a watershed moment for our bilateral relations. I am confident that this visit will inject fresh momentum into Georgian-Serbian relations, further deepening our ties across every domain.

Relations between Georgia and Serbia are built upon long-standing traditions of friendship, mutual respect, and people-to-people connections. Furthermore, our nations are bound by centuries of Christian heritage and shared values. In this regard, too, I must highlight the President’s extraordinary efforts to ensure that Serbia steadfastly protects its religious and ethnic identity. This is particularly commendable, especially in the face of contemporary global challenges. This bond of shared values further solidifies our bilateral ties and creates a new, highly significant impetus for the further deepening of our relations.

Our countries and our governments understand the fundamental importance of defending sovereignty. I express my profound gratitude to the President for his steadfast support of Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Likewise, I wish to emphasise once more that Georgia is, naturally, a highly resolute supporter of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia,” the Prime Minister stated.

As Irakli Kobakhidze noted, the meeting addressed key issues on the bilateral cooperation agenda.

“I am delighted that we had the opportunity today to discuss the key issues on our bilateral cooperation agenda in detail and to review the prospects for the further deepening of our ties and cooperation. We devoted particular attention to the importance of political dialogue. It is pleasing to note that top-level contacts have intensified in recent years. The decision by the Republic of Serbia to open an embassy in Tbilisi is a tremendously important step. I am certain that this diplomatic mission will significantly contribute to the further strengthening of cooperation between our countries,” Irakli Kobakhidze said.
