PM: Georgia expects to harvest 50,000 tonnes of hazelnuts

“Hazelnut picking has already started in Samegrelo. The forecasted figure is 50,000 tonnes. Its export will bring about $100 million to the region,” said the Prime Minister of Georgia, Giorgi Gakharia during the event — “Hazelnut 2020” — in Zugdidi.

“Hazelnut growing is paramount both for Samegrelo and for the Georgian economy in general,” noted PM.

“Although this year was epidemiologically difficult and we had many restrictions economically, the works of agriculture, as well as infrastructure, have not stopped.

It may not be a big number, but compared to the period after 2016, when the brown marmorated stink bug hit Samegrelo, of course, we have obvious progress,” stressed Giorgi Gakharia.

PM added that Georga’s response to brown marmorated stink bug was one of the best examples of how to fight these pests in the world and this fact is recognized.
